Monaco MUN Welcomes You!

Monaco Model United Nations is back, so come and join us to discuss the global burning issues of todays world!

Organized and hosted by the Master's students of the International University of Monaco, the second edition of the UN simulation will be held on 13th April 2012 in the Principality of Monaco. The event is held under the supervision of Mr. JP Bugada from the United Nations Regional Information Centre.

As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approach the end date, it is ever more imminent to tackle those issues which are far from their reach.

Therefore, this year's discussions will revolve around the issue of Access to Water.

At the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, Nelson Mandela declared: “Among the many things I learnt as a president, was the centrality of water in the social, political and economic affairs of the country, the continent and the world.”
Moreover, on July 28, 2010, the General Assembly of the UN has declared that “access to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights”.

The 7th Millennium Development Goal promises to ensure environmental sustainability. Apart of focusing on integrating sustainable development policies into governmental policies, protecting environmental resources and biodiversity and improving lives of slum dwellers, the aim is also to:

Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

The current situation, as described by the UN is as follows:
  • The world is on track to meet the drinking water target, though much remains to be done in some regions
  • Accelerated and targeted efforts are needed to bring drinking water to all rural households
  • Safe water supply remains a challenge in many parts of the world
  • With half the population of developing regions without sanitation, the 2015 target appears to be out of reach
  • Disparities in urban and rural sanitation coverage remain daunting
  • Improvements in sanitation are bypassing the poor

It is important for all of us to be actively involved in the process, should the change ever happen. Thus, we hope to welcome as many young people from the region of the South of France as possible, to come and be the leaders themselves!

Register now and be part of this amazing event!
